BBL Laser Treatments

A treatment that targets spots, redness and signs of skin ageing with Broad Band Light (BBL).

The brown spots, redness and capillaries that appear on our skin over time are often the visible traces of the sun and ageing. BBL (Broad Band Light) is a powerful light treatment that can target these problems at the same time. It is a comfortable and effective method preferred for evening out skin tone, lightening spots and giving the skin an overall freshness.

What is BBL and how does it work?

BBL is an advanced light (IPL-based) technology that emits intense light energy over a broad range of wavelengths. The emitted light is absorbed by the targets in the skin (brown pigment and the vascular structures that cause redness). Spots containing pigment are broken down by heat energy, while enlarged capillaries contract. The skin responds to this stimulus by renewing itself.

One of the most important advantages of BBL is that it can address different problems together in a single session. Spots, redness and general tone irregularity can all be targeted in the same application; this makes it a comprehensive skin-refreshing method.

In which problems is it preferred?

  • Sun- and age-related brown spots.
  • Persistent redness and the appearance of capillaries on the face.
  • Skin tone irregularity and dullness.
  • A wish for general skin refreshing and radiance.
  • Sun-exposed areas such as the face, neck, décolleté and back of the hands.

BBL gives effective results especially in light-to-medium skin tones and in superficial pigment problems. The type of spot and the skin colour determine the suitability and parameters of the application; for this reason a preliminary assessment is important.

How is it applied?

Before the application, a skin analysis is carried out and settings suitable for the skin are determined. During the procedure a cooling gel can be applied to the area and the eyes are protected with special glasses. During the light pulses, most people feel a short warmth and tingling, like the gentle touch of a rubber band. The procedure usually takes 15–30 minutes.

Immediately after the application, brown spots may temporarily darken slightly; this is an expected and positive sign. These spots come to the surface and flake off within a few days, leaving a more even tone behind.

Healing and aftermath

BBL is an application that allows a quick return to social life. After the procedure there may be mild redness and a sensation of warmth; these usually pass in a short time. During the flaking process of the darkened spots, the skin should not be picked at, should be moisturised and the physician's recommendations should be followed.

Sun protection after the treatment is absolutely essential. Unprotected sun both disrupts the result and can trigger the formation of new spots. For this reason a high-factor sunscreen is an inseparable part of the treatment.

The way to preserve the result of BBL is to make sun protection a habit after the application.

How many sessions are needed?

Even after a single session, freshness and brightness can be noticed in the skin; but for the best result, several sessions are usually planned at certain intervals. The number of sessions varies according to the intensity of the spots, the skin type and the targeted result. Maintenance sessions at certain intervals during the year may be recommended to preserve the result obtained.

Who is it not suitable for?

BBL is not applied or is postponed in very dark skin types, tanned skin, the presence of an active skin infection and the use of some medications that cause light sensitivity. It is also not preferred during pregnancy. It should also be remembered that not every brown spot may be harmless; for this reason, dermatological evaluation of the spots before treatment is important for safety.

What sets BBL apart?

The strongest aspect of broad band light technology is its versatility. Within a single application, both pigment and vascular targets can be addressed with different filters and settings. This makes it not just a ‘spot treatment’ but a holistic care that improves the overall freshness and tone of the skin.

Many people adopt BBL at regular intervals as a care routine that keeps the signs of skin ageing under control. With regular applications, skin tone is observed to remain even and vibrant for longer; in this respect BBL offers both a restorative and a protective approach.

The importance of season and timing

As with all light-based treatments, the autumn and winter months, when the sun is less intense, are generally more suitable for BBL. Applying it on tanned skin both reduces the effectiveness and increases the risk of side effects. For this reason avoiding the sun and using protection before and after the application is an inseparable part of the process.

Treatment in the summer months is not entirely impossible; but in this period sun protection must be followed much more meticulously. The most correct timing is determined during the skin analysis, taking your lifestyle into account as well.

Frequently asked questions

Can I return to social life immediately after the procedure? Usually yes. The mild redness passes in a short time; during the flaking process of the darkened spots, camouflage with make-up is mostly possible. In this respect BBL is counted among the ‘lunch break’ applications.

Is it suitable for melasma (hormonal pigmentation)? Melasma is a special condition and can sometimes be resistant to light treatments, even recurring with the wrong approach. For this reason, in melasma, BBL is preferred when necessary, with a careful assessment and a suitable care plan.

In how many sessions is a result obtained? Usually several sessions are recommended; however, freshness can be noticed even after the first session. The number of sessions is personalised according to the intensity of the spots and the target.

Is it painful? BBL is generally a well-tolerated application. During the light pulses there may be short-lived warmth and a mild stinging sensation; cooling gel and the devices' cooling systems increase comfort. A short-lived sensation of warmth after the procedure is normal and passes quickly.

Can it be combined with other skin-refreshing methods? Yes. BBL can be planned together with mesotherapy that supports skin quality or applications that stimulate collagen, at suitable intervals. In this way both spots and redness and the general texture of the skin are addressed within the same holistic plan. Which combination is suitable is determined according to the skin analysis.

How long is the result preserved? The spots lightened by the treatment recede markedly; however, the sun is the strongest trigger of new spot formation. For this reason the permanence of the result largely depends on the sun protection and skin care applied afterwards.
